Reception
Welcome to Reception's class page
We hope you enjoy seeing the learning and skills we have been developing through our planned and progressive curriculum on our class page.
Potions and Perfumes
The children were exploring and creating their own potions and perfumes today using flowers and different coloured water. They smelt beautiful and were bright and eye-catching.
Science Week
For Science week, Reception class developed their skills through investigating, exploring, experimenting and using their senses.
We took part in an experiment using lemonade and raisins. When we dropped the raisins into the lemonade, the bubbles made the raisins bounce up and down. Children were able to record their findings by drawing what they saw. They then stirred the mixture until the bubbles started to go away. They were able to notice that this made the raisins sink to the bottom and stop bouncing.
We have also been growing bean plants and herbs in class this half-term as part of our topic of "The Natural World." The children used their observational skills to notice how the plants had started growing and changing. We watered the plants to ensure they could continue to grow and noticed their roots had started growing down into the soil and their shoots had started to grow up.
Children took part in another experiment with sugar and water. We had three different choices of sugar: granulated, icing and brown. We discussed the similarities and differences between the sugars, and then we stirred scoops of sugar into cups of water. It looked like the sugar had disappeared, but it had actually dissolved into the water. We noticed that the brown sugar turned the water a different colour and the icing sugar made it look foggy and cloudy. The children didn't believe that the sugar was still there, so we had to have a tiny taste of our mixtures to check – they tasted really nice and sweet!
World Book Day 2026
The theme of our World Book Day this year was Witches and Wizards!
The children had a variety of learning activities linking to our theme. Some children designed, made and decorated their own witch or wizard hat. Many children took part in the story writing competition and created their own mini storybook or our key text "Room on the Broom". They earned themselves a special certificate for their excellent author and illustrator skills. Children were also given the chance to create their own potions in the outdoor area. They practised pouring, scooping, mixing, stirring and many other key fine motor skills. Children also used masks to act out the story of "Room on the Broom" and remembered the key parts and phrases very well!
Well done everybody for a great World Book Day!
