Year 2

World Book Day

World Book Day

Year 2 had a magical time celebrating World Book Day with activities inspired by the story The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy.

The children explored the story through a range of creative activities across the day. They took part in a drama session where they acted out scenes from the story, using expression and imagination to bring the characters to life.  The children then performed their scenes for the children in Reception, practising their oracy skills by watching and listening to others perform as well as speaking clearly and using expression during their own performances.

In English, the children wrote their own short narratives about a magical spell that went wrong. They worked hard to include exciting vocabulary, expanded noun phrases and conjunctions to make their writing interesting for the reader.

During art, the children designed colourful magical potions bubbling in cauldrons. They experimented with colour mixing and drawing to create fizzing, swirling potion effects.

It was a wonderful day filled with creativity, imagination and a shared love of reading.

Art week

Year 2 have made sculptures using recyclable materials, learning our art skill of constructing from junk materials developing our awareness of natural and man -made forms and environments. We learnt about the art work of Sculptor El Anatsui who uses found recyclable materials to create his sculptures, and incorporates repetitive patterns in his art work. We used this to influence our own free-standing sculptures, ensuring that they were strong and able to stay standing.
We used a range of decorative techniques such as applying materials in different ways, using glue and tape. We also used a range of tools to mark make and shape materials for our sculpture, impressing and shaping materials in different ways such as scrunching and folding.  We made different patterns using paint and materials. We created a repetitive pattern strip to wrap around our sculpture using junk materials, building the skill of replicating patterns and textures in a 3D form.
